How to Carry Scissors

When walking around with a pair of scissors, it is important to carry them properly so that if you should fall, you won't accidentally stab yourself or anyone around you.

Open your hand with your palm facing away from you.

Spread your fingers slightly.

Place the scissors between your first and second (index and middle) fingers with the point facing away from you.

Hold the scissors lightly without wrapping your thumb around them.

When a person trips and falls their instinctive reflex is to put out their hands to catch themselves. These instincts cause a person to thrust their hands forward and open them. If you are carrying scissors or a knife in this fashion the reflexive motion will usually cause the scissors or knife to be thrown forward, away from your fall zone, making it less likely that you will fall on the object and impale yourself.

Tips

  • The same procedure should be followed when carrying a knife - just be sure that the sharp edge of the knife is facing so that it won't cut your fingers.

Warnings

  • Carrying a sharp object is dangerous. Never run or hurry when carrying scissors, a knife, or any other sharp object.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings and other people or pets who may be near. A small child or dog might collide with the scissors or knife.
