How to Remove Limescale from Aluminum

Aug 7, 2009 09:38 PM

Limescale buildup on aluminum is unsightly. It usually occurs from the use of hard water. This article explains how to remove it quickly and easily.

Select the right product

Use any lime scale/mineral deposit/hard water stain remover. These are found at grocery and hardware stores.

Apply the product as directed on the instructions

See "Tips" for any particular challenges when cleaning.

Agitate with a brush or sponge.

Wipe off or rinse with water thoroughly.

Tips

  • If the buildup is thick or has been there long, it may take several applications. Each application removes a layer. Agitating with a brush or rough backed sponge that is safe for plastic would speed up working your way through the layers. A gel product stays in place better to "work" longer than a runny product. You'll know it is working when you see the product foam up a bit as it chemically reacts with the mineral deposits.

Warnings

  • Using a scrubber that is not safe on Teflon or plastic might scratch the aluminum surface.
